Teresa Herzgsell: Data Driven Perspectives on Cultural Heritage

This article approaches questions of intellectual heritage from a data-driven standpoint, and uses specific indicators to delineate the issue using the collection of metadata gathered by the project. In the datasheets the project has created, there are markers that can function as starting points for such an approach. This article will use two quantitative markers for inquiries on intellectual and cultural heritage: the entries in the dedication column and the year of death, deducing from the latter, contributors who appeared post mortem in the magazines.

Teresa Herzgsell: Genre distribution and Fictional Prose in the Magazines of the Avant-Garde

When looking at all 19248 contributions across the avant-garde magazines of the corpus of the project ‘Literarische Modernisierungsprozesse und transnationale Netzwerkbildung im Medium der Kulturzeitschrift: vom ‘Modernismo’ zur Avantgarde’ in their totality, we can see, as this graphic illustrates, that there is a clear preponderance of Non-fictional Prose texts, with such texts making up almost half of all contributions.

 

Claudia Cedeño Báez: Literary Genres and Networks in the Cultural Magazines of Modernismo

The modernist tranche of our research project consists of 16 publications: Alma Española, Arte Joven, El Nuevo Mercurio, Gente Vieja, Germinal, Helios, Instantáneas, La Biblioteca, La Habana Literaria, Luz, Luz i Sombra, Renacimiento, Revista Azul, Revista Nueva, Vida Literaria and Vida Nueva. After a close-reading collective effort, we put together a database of 10,217 contributions, which together reflect the plurality of discursive records in these printed media.

Teresa Herzgsell: Categorization as Theory and Practice: Type of Contribution

The system that we created to collate the data extracted from the magazines (see Teresa Herzgsell Categories) includes a typological system for the magazine contributions designated ‘Type of Contribution’. We decided on a typology rather than a classification, as a typology allows for the overlaps and liminality in categorisation (Müller: 21) that reflect the reality of our historical material more accurately.

In order to form a basis for quantitative approaches to the magazines we are analysing, we have created a grid for data-collection (1) that has enabled us to split the contents of the 42 magazines of our corpus into a set of categories. That allows us to quantitatively sort and analyse the material we are working on, with regard to the research questions that are at the heart of our project (2).

Hanno Ehrlicher: The Corpus - Cultural Magazines from Spain and Hispanic America

The corpus of cultural magazines, from which data have been systematically collected, was designed in accordance with the overall research goal to investigate the dynamics of transatlantic exchange within the Spanish-speaking cultural world in two phases of modernization between 1890 and 1936, and to map the two aesthetic currents of Modernismo and the avant-garde.
In compiling the data, we followed a number of criteria to ensure that the data corpus was as meaningful as possible:
